LMA Listserv Feedback

Help Make the ‘Serv a Better Service!

The LMA Technology Committee is always on the lookout for ways to improve the technologies that are part of the LMA’s member services. One such area is our beloved listserv, which many of us rely on as both a way to get answers to questions ranging from the trivial to the critical, and as a forum for expressing our views on a wide variety topics (when, happily, someone asks the right question). A great deal of knowledge moves across the ‘serv, and it’s one of the important advantages of membership.

So it’s time for you to let the Tech Committee know what we can do to make the listserv better for you – more robust, more accessible, more functional, easier to use, etc. For example, some areas that have come up in our discussions are:

  • Partitioning the listserv by topic (e.g., technology questions, strategy, PR, etc), by region for certain kinds of topics, or other focused areas
  • Having chapter-focused listservs to encourage more interaction from people with local questions
  • Archiving important listserv threads as easily accessible “resources”
  • Improving the ability to search the listserv archives
  • Including listserv posts as part of a larger “knowledge base”
  • Eliminating the double log-in (if possible) when accessing the online listserv
  • Finding a better process for uploading attachments when listserv responses require documents/attachments

If anything about the listserv has been bugging you, or if you’ve had a great idea for an improvement in any area, we want to hear about it.

Service Provider referrals

Would be helpful if questions regarding service provider referrals where segmented as a separate topic.

Listserve suggestions

Agree with segmenting posts by topic, also by vendor requests as previously noted. Also agree that ability to archive listserve threads is important. The double-log in is annoying but I figured it was temporary until the listserve portion of the site was upgraded. The only other comment is that it would be helpful to find a way we could eliminate the "me, too" responses to messages requesting information or input -- perhaps have some way to indicate that others are interested in a particular answer without having dozens of "I am interested in that information, too" postings.

settings

Posted by Jane Fritz at 09/04/2007 11:46
I have changed my setting for notification from once daily to received as they are contributed trying to find something manageable. I believe daily would be most time effective and yet there is so much unintelligible data that it is not meaningful. As contributed is meaningful, but constant interruptions throughout the day is distracting. Is there another setting that I'm not aware of that addresses this issue?
Thanks,
Jane Fritz

Synopsis

In light of Jane's comments, it would be great if a usable daily digest could be developed. One that included the major topics for easy end of day perusal, eliminating the noise of the 'me too' responses.

Limit Vendor Participation or create a separate list with no vendors

Posted by Christopher Hunt at 09/05/2007 18:09
Based on a recent experience, I would recommend either closing the listserv to vendors, or setting up an additional list that is independent and closed to vendors so that members can provide candid feedback aout products without having to worry if a vendor will see it and harass the person who posts the info to change their mind. I ama memb if ILTA and all but a few of their listservs are closed to vendor participation which makes discussion very candid and extremely useful. I strongly feel LMA should have the same setup.

extra characters in the email version of the listserv digest

Posted by Juliet Sallette at 10/09/2007 04:48
I am glad that you are overhauling this system. I enjoy reading my daily digest in my in box. My main issue is with the extra characters that I have to scroll down through to get through some of the messages. Receiving the digest through email is supposed to simplify your life, not make it more taxing.

The double log-in for the online listserve is another thing that should be deleted.

I love using the List Serve and find the exchange of ideas among legal marketers and vendors helpful. I am delighted the system is being improved to make it more user friendly and searchable. This will be a great improvement.

Scrolling through all the noise on the page!

I subscribe to the daily digest of the Listserve. To be honest with you, if there are more than 3 listings, I don't have the patience to scroll through all the unreadable text, in order to get to the real content. I get completely walled out and just hit "delete". I'm sure I'm missing out on good comments, but just don't have the time or patience to navigate my way to actual English words.

Is there a special setting that I need to know about.
